Hot Weather Pet Safety

Summer is just around the corner, which means there are some safety precautions to think about for your pets. The increased temperatures pose a risk for your pets, and it can be difficult to keep them cool. While dogs and cats do sweat, it can be harder for them to regulate their body temperature than humans. At TLC Animal Hospital in El Paso, we can recommend a few safety tips to use this summer.

Stay Hydrated

A midsummer day can put your pet at risk for heatstroke. You will want to make sure your cat or dog has access to plenty of fresh water and avoids staying in direct sunlight for long periods. If you are outside, plan a designated area where your pet can stay in the shade to rest and rehydrate as needed.

Don't Leave A Pet Unattended In A Car

Dangerous levels of heat occur inside a vehicle within a matter of minutes. Internal temperatures can reach past 150 degrees Fahrenheit, which is well beyond a safe level for any pet. Don't leave your pet inside for any reason. If you have to take your pet with you on a hotter day, make sure to bring extra water and a bowl.

Avoid Hot Surfaces

Metal and asphalt can quickly skyrocket to a scorching surface, which means your pet's paws can quickly get burned. Avoid these areas during prime sun hours (generally 10 am to 2 pm) because your pet can become overheated.

Pest Prevention

As the weather gets hotter, it means the return of insects that annoy us and our pets. More specifically, fleas, ticks, or mosquitoes are rampant, and they have a risk of transmitting dangerous diseases to your pets. It is a good idea to increase the frequency of baths, shampoo often, and keep your pet's coat shorter during this time of the year.
