Holiday Pet Care

Let it be a truly happy holiday and New Year when both you and your pets can get through them safely. We here at TLC Animal Hospital in El Paso, TX, offer these tips for taking care of dogs and cats during the hectic holidays.

Find an Emergency Veterinarian

Are you sure that your current vet will see your pet if a medical emergency should happen over the holidays? The time to find out is now, before an emergency happens. If your veterinarian does not provide emergency services, ask for a recommendation for an emergency animal hospital in your area. While you’re doing your holiday shopping, drive to the new place to make sure you know how to get there during an actual emergency.

Don’t Leave Burning Candles Unattended

Candles provide a unique glow and charm. However, they can be fire hazards if a pet should knock one over or jostle a table where one is burning.

Don’t Leave Presents Under the Tree

Many dogs are poisoned each during the holidays by eating boxes of chocolate and other chocolate goodies in presents left under the tree. Chocolate is poisonous to both dogs and cats. If you do not know what is in a present, don’t risk it.

Keep All Medications Out of Reach

Another main pet poison over the holidays is medication meant for humans. Keep all medication in cabinets or other places where pets cannot get to. If you have overnight guests, ask them to keep their medication in their luggage or purses.

Provide a Safe Room

With all the parties, music, and noise, things can get very stressful for pets. If your pet starts getting anxious, place your pet in a warm, quiet room with a bowl of water, a soft bed, and a special treat.
