At TLC Animal Hospital, we understand that any surgery involving your pet can feel overwhelming—especially when it affects their eyes. Enucleation, or the surgical removal of an eye, is sometimes the most compassionate choice to relieve pain, eliminate disease, or protect your pet’s overall health.
We’re here to guide you through this process with empathy, expertise, and the highest standard of veterinary care.
Enucleation is the complete removal of an eye, typically performed due to:
- Severe trauma or injury to the eye
- Chronic glaucoma causing pain and pressure
- Intraocular tumors or cancer
- Severe or non-healing infections
- Congenital or developmental eye defects
- Uncontrolled inflammation (uveitis)
Although it may sound drastic, most pets adjust remarkably well to life with one eye (or even none), often showing immediate improvement in comfort and activity.
At TLC Animal Hospital, our veterinarians carefully evaluate each case. Enucleation is typically recommended only when:
- The eye is non-visual and painful
- Other treatments (medications or corrective surgery) are no longer effective
- Preserving the eye poses a risk to your pet’s overall health
We prioritize your pet’s comfort and quality of life in every decision.
- General anesthesia and a comprehensive pain control strategy is used to ensure comfort
- The eye is gently and carefully removed, and the incision is sutured closed
- Pain management and antibiotics are administered
- Most pets are healed within 10–14 days
- An e-collar is recommended to prevent rubbing or scratching
- Pain medication and antibiotics will be prescribed
- Stitches are typically removed at a recheck visit
Yes! Most pets adapt quickly, using their other senses (and remaining eye, if applicable) to navigate. They can still play, walk, eat, and enjoy life.
Yes, but in most cases the surgical site heals cleanly with minimal scarring. The area where this eye was present may sink in slightly with time, but this is often a subtle and gradual change. It usually only takes a few weeks to grow accustomed to your pet’s new appearance.
Your pet will receive excellent pain control during and after surgery. Many pets actually experience immediate relief from ongoing eye pain.
