Pet Wellness Exams

The Importance of Pet Wellness Exams

Part of quality vet care is making sure your animal has an annual checkup. Just like humans, these visits are critical because they can take on a proactive role in regards to overall health. However, identifying possible health concerns for pets becomes a little trickier. Here's what you should expect the next time your pet goes in for a checkup with a veterinarian.

.

Vet Care Includes a Physical Exam

The veterinarian will be able to make several determinations with a physical examination. The dog or cat's eyes, abdomen, ears, nose, and other extremities will be carefully observed to see if any abnormal functioning exists.  Also, your pet's weight will be taken to see if it falls in the healthy range. Suggestions could be given for how best to keep your pet at a healthy weight. Oral health is always a concern, too, so your pet's teeth will be thoroughly evaluated. Again, recommendations on how to best practice oral health care at home are usually communicated. The veterinarian might want to take a urine or stool sample to test for diabetes, kidney functioning, and to identify possible infection.

Current Vaccinations Are Essential

Keeping up to date on your pet's scheduled vaccinations is critical as they start to age.  Also, they will help prevent the likelihood of developing possible life-threatening diseases. Your veterinarian will communicate with you the necessary vaccines your pet should be taking. They'll also give you an outline of what vaccinations should be completed in the upcoming months and years. A minimum of a yearly visit to the doctor is essential to ensure you don't fall behind.

Other Testing Can Be Done

If anything seems out of the ordinary, the doctor may recommend further testing. Examples of these additional screenings could be x-rays, blood work, or even an ultrasound. Your pet will be kept comfortable for any new tests that need to be done. Especially as your pet gets older, it may be a good idea to have additional health checks to be on the safe side.
