National Dog Day in August

National Dog Day is August 26

At TLC Animal Hospital in El Paso, TX, we look forward to celebrating National Dog Day every year. We enjoy seeing the different ways that people celebrate their furry friends. As veterinarians, we also view August 26 as a time to remind pet owners of how important a dog's health is to a long and happy life.

National Dog Day

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige. She chose the date because it was on August 26 that Colleen's family adopted their first dog. She wanted to remind people of the special place that dogs have in our lives. Not only do dogs provide us with companionship, but they also work in law enforcement, are trained as service dogs, and help in search and rescue efforts. Without dogs, our world would be a less happy place.

Visit a Veterinarian

Just like people, dogs should get regular checkups. Puppies under the age of one need more frequent checkups. They are growing rapidly and need immunizations to prevent diseases. Once they are a year old, dogs should have an annual checkup to assess their overall health and receive vaccinations. Older dogs -- over the age of seven -- may need more frequent checkups. You should talk to us about senior care for your dog. Checkups are an excellent time to discuss behavioral problems or other changes in your pet. Regular checkups are a way to ensure a long and healthy life for your pet.

Vaccinations

Vaccines protect your dog against diseases because the world is not dog-friendly. There are plenty of opportunities for your pet to be exposed to a disease. There are dog parks, groomers, playdates, and day camps. Each experience, no matter how enjoyable, has risks unless your dog is properly vaccinated. Vaccines help your pet build up immunity to infections; however, immunity does not last forever. Your pet will need boosters throughout his or her life.

Veterinarians recommend a set of core vaccinations for all pets. Non-core immunizations may be needed depending on your dog's lifestyle. Dogs that spend more time outdoors may also require additional vaccinations.

  • All dogs should be vaccinated against rabies, canine hepatitis, distemper, and parvovirus. These immunizations should be repeated every one to three years.
  • Non-core vaccines such as Lyme disease, canine influenza, Bordetella, and leptospirosis may also be recommended.

Be sure to discuss the need for non-core vaccinations with our staff.
