Fleas in Winter

When winter is relatively mild, fleas can survive these temperatures and keep seeking out pets as hosts. Your pet’s flea and tick prevention regimen should continue during the winter. Even if the conditions outside are bleak, fleas can thrive inside of a heated home. All it takes is for one flea to lay eggs inside your home for a major infestation to begin.

Even if your pet spends less time outdoors in the winter, he or she can still pick up fleas from being around other pets. Flea bites can irritate your pet, and you risk your pet having an allergic reaction to them if he or she is not on preventative medication.

Ticks in Winter

Ticks can live through mild winters. If it is above 45 degrees outside, ticks can survive just fine. Like fleas, they can thrive all season indoors no matter what the temperature is like outside. While some species of ticks go dormant in the winter, not all types do. The best plan is to keep your pet on flea and tick prevention medication no matter the time of year or what the weather is like. Tick bites have the potential to spread just as many diseases in the winter as they do in the spring and summer.
